Natural Mosquito Repellent – And Other Pests Too

Barbara HauckUncategorized

Keep in mind… repelling insects is about more than just maintaining comfort. It may help keep you healthy, too, as insects can carry serious diseases.

It is not uncommon to hear of mosquitoes transmitting West Nile virus, encephalitis, and in some areas, malaria.

Most insect repellents on the market today have dangerous chemicals as active ingredients. The most common of these, DEET, has some serious potential side effects. These include damage to brain cells, loss of memory, headaches, fatigue, respiratory problems and more.

Those most vulnerable to these problems are children and pregnant women.

Because of the known problems caused by insect bites and the popularly marketed repellents, there is growing interest in finding a good quality natural insect repellent.

Essential Oils as an Insect Repellent

This is where I’ve found essential oils to be an excellent choice.

Besides, essential oils not only work in repelling bothersome insects, but they smell great, too.

My first choice to repel insects is the essential oil blend  Purification. I just take a few drops and rub it on exposed skin.

Cymbopogon nardus† (Citronella) oil, Rosmarinus officinalis† (Rosemary) leaf oil, Cymbopogon flexuosus†  (Lemongrass) oil, Melaleuca alternifolia† (Tea tree) leaf oil, Lavandula hybrida† (Lavandin) oil, Myrtus  communis† (Myrtle) oil.

You can also tear some strips of cotton material. Then soak and hang near your table or chair.  A fellow Pinner reported this: “Went to Hawaii with a group of thirteen adults and children. I’d squeeze some sunscreen in my hand then add a few drops of the Purification blend and rub on. I was the only one out of the group to not get any bug bites, day and night critters both.”

Here’s some of the other things that you can do with Purification –

Add Purification essential oil blend to your washing machine to freshen laundry.

Add a couple drops of Purification essential oil blend to shoes to help neutralize odors.

Add a few drops of Purification essential oil blend to a cotton ball to help eliminate stale air in the office or your child’s room.

Diffuse Purification essential oil blend to dispel unpleasant odors and clear the air of impurities.

Diffuse Purification essential oil blend to eliminate odors after the dog returns from playing outdoors in the rain.

You can also make your own repellent spray by mixing 5 drops Lemon essential oil and 5 drops Purification oil in a 1 or 2 ounce spray bottle filled with water. Apply as a mist on your skin to protect yourself from flies, mosquitoes and other insects.    Lemon oil
