Healthy Teenagers

healthy teens

Teenagers! I was warned about them when my husband and I first began having children. Turns out some of the warnings were quite valid, but not all. I love having teenagers in the house. We have had at least one teenager in our house since 2003. We began using Young Living products in 2004.

It would be easy to claim that my first teenager drove me to using essential oils, but that isn’t exactly true. But there are certain oils that I do use more often because I have teenagers. That could be a whole other week worth of posts.

My teenagers don’t always reach for oils first, but because they have experienced the power of them since they were young they trust them and often return to them when what they tried didn’t work. Could mom’s crazy oils really work? Oh yes they do!

Healthy Teenage Emotions

Ah, the emotions of a teen. They can be your favorite person one day and your worst enemy the next. Today’s young adults are facing big challenges and decisions. Peer pressure is big.  The stress of school can be heavy. Having a social life is very important to them. How can we help our teens support their emotions in a safe and natural way?

Common Sense blend. I am convinced that Gary Young formulated this EO blend for teenagers! It’s like all hints of common sense can disappear when they get into those teen years. But there is hope!

I love the aroma of this blend, and since it isn’t flowery smelling my guys will use it too.  My teens have come to respect this blend for days when they are just feeling overwhelmed and struggle to make decisions.

Common Sense contains 7 oils that are all known for calming and relaxing. Frankincense, Rue, Ocotea, Lime, Dorado Azul, Golden Rod, Ylang Ylang. YUMMMM!!!  No wonder I love this blend! Look these singles up and learn how they can each benefit you and be encouraged by how they can benefit your teen as well.

Sometimes we have a difficult day and we need a little help. I love that my teens reach for oils to help. They know essential oils can help them to feel calm and not as overwhelmed by whatever is going on that day.

These 4 choices are a great place for your teen to start. Stress Away/Joy/Lavender/Frankincense there are many more.

What helps you on those rough days? Chances are it will help your teenager too.

-Many times the emotional roller coaster our teens experience are a result of hormones.

  • The aroma of Dragon Time™ is designed to invite positive emotions for women, especially during their monthly cycle. This blend is recommended for both young and mature women.
  • Mister is for the guys. When you know things are changing, this is a great time to introduce this blend. It helps keep the male hormones balanced. This is a blend of Sage , fennel, lavender, myrtle , peppermint , and blue yarrow, in a base of sesame seed oil.

Emotions are only a small part of the complicated puzzles our teens deal with.

Skin Care for Teenagers

As teenagers, our kids are growing fast and crazy stuff is happening inside them and suddenly our beautiful little kids have transformed into pimple faced, greasy hair people. It’s a rough time for them, but YL products can help it not be quite so rough. Young Living body and hair products are plant based, infused with essential oils and absent of the chemicals that more popular products contain. Reducing the chemical load on my kids is important to help set the foundation they need to become healthy and strong adults.

ART skin care system is a great place to start. Guys can use this too because it doesn’t smell like a garden of flowers. It is gentle, but does a great job of cleaning the skin and keeping it healthy looking.

Orange Blossom facial wash has a great fresh scent and is a favorite with my girls (and me). We learned that we can stretch this facial wash by adding about a tablespoon to a foaming soap bottle and then add water. We also like to toss in some of our favorite skin supporting essential oils for an extra touch.  Our favorites are Frankincense, Tea Tree, Lavender and Melrose.

Sometimes their skin needs something a little stronger, especially our athletic kids or those with not so healthy eating habits. Thieves foaming handsoap as a facial wash & use the Thieves mouthwash, diluted with water for toner work really well for that acne prone skin.

You can also make your own toner.

Mix together & store in a glass spray bottle. ¾ cup of steeped green tea, ¼ raw apple cider vinegar, 10-20 drops of skin supporting essential oils.

Can’t get your teens to wash their face with soap? Make cleansing pads! I love that you can custom create these with the oils that your teen most needs or loves. Here is the recipe.

Cleansing Pads Ingredients:

~8 or 12 oz mason jar w/lid

~1 c. water

~1 Tbls. Dr. Bronner’s Baby Mild Unscented Organic Castile soap

~1 Tbls. melted organic coconut oil

~1/2 tsp. Humphrey’s Organic Witch Hazel

~5 drops each, Young Living Lavender and Tea Tree Essential Oils (or oils of your choice)

~cotton rounds

Place cotton rounds in the jar. Combine the ingredients & pour over cotton rounds.

Teaching your teens to take care of their skin is half the battle. The other half is teaching them to eat right.

Nutritious & Delicious

I don’t know about you, but my greatest challenge is making sure my teenagers are eating healthy. This is actually like nailing Jell-O to a wall. My kids grew up eating healthy whole foods, but the temptation to eat junk when all of your friends are has proven to be just too much.   I can’t control everything they eat at this point of their life. They are out with friends, working and really busy. Drive thru lines are way too convenient. So, it is really important to me that I have healthy options for them at home and on the go.

Ningxia Red is first of the day! That 2oz shot is going to give them more nutrition that probably anything else they eat the rest of the day.  Master Formula Multivitamin’s and Ningxia Red together will give your young adults the support their body needs to be healthy and strong. Master Formula can be taken by anyone, 12 yrs and older. Click this link to read all about Master Formula.

Wolfberry bars make for a very healthy snack and they passed the teenager taste test. These bars contain the super food, Ningxia wolfberry, that is a great protein source. And they are very filling. And did I mention they are really tasty?

Pure Protein Complete is an easy way to send them out the door with some solid protein. We mix ours with almond milk and often add 2 oz of Ningxia Red for added protein and nutrition. Morning smoothies are awesome with Pure Protein Complete added in also.

Time to Focus

When it is time to buckle down & get some serious studying done essential oils are a great help for our teenagers. My teens will either use a diffuser, or apply one of these oils topically.

  • Brain Power: This blend is a formulation of oils that are meant to boost the brain. I love this blend, not just for my teens, but for me! Frankincense, Sandalwood, Helichrysum, Melissa, Blue Cypress and Lavender. I’m feeling smarter already!
  • Clarity Essential Oil is an excellent blend of essential oils that is specifically designed to provide greater mental concentration and alertness. Use it before a test, meeting or competition to give you that mental edge. Or, use it to give you a boost when you are mentally fatigued! This blend has 12 brain stimulating oils in it!
  • Peppermint: Studies show peppermint is great at helping with concentration and focus. This oil is great to help wake you up for those late night study sessions.
  • En-R-Gee. This blend is a great way to give yourself a little boost when you still have more studying to do. For mental alertness from fatigue, I often combine En-R-Gee Essential Oil with Clarity or Brain Power essential oil blends. These are also good for traveling so if you are planning a trip, definitely bring En-R-Gee along for the ride!

What I love most about all of this is that these products are not exclusive to just our teenagers. Of course we can use any of these for ourselves as well.

Teenagers and Sports.

It’s just a way of life for most. No matter the age, sports can be hard on the body. How can we support our teenagers well during the sports season.

Recovery/ Ningxia & Nitro.  Ningxia Red is one of those products, that if we don’t use anything else, we at least drink this. The nutritional content is crazy & there is more protein in 2 oz of Ningxia Red than in a boiled egg. After a hard workout, replenishing what the body has used up is really important. Ningxia Red helps do that in a healthy way.

Add a tube of Nitro for an added punch to your energy levels. Stash Nitro wherever you need it! The small, convenient packaging makes it a great addition to their, gym bag, or purse. Each box contains 14 20-ml tubes. Nitro gives an added boost during a work out.

Hydrate with oily water! Add a few drops of a Citrus or Peppermint Vitality oil to their water! Peppermint water is very cooling to a hot and sweaty teenager while it supports their digestive system. That is a double win!

Like I said, sports can be hard on the body. That is when products like Ortho Ease and Ortho Sport are helpful. Add some PanAway or Deep Relief for added comfort to those sore muscles. We personally love Copaiba applied over Panaway. It is like an apology to your body after a hard work out!
