About a year ago I went to see a naturopathic physician for the first time in my life. The visit had been on my mind for months, and I had finally made an appointment. My blood pressure at the time was seriously high (190/100), and I was also wanting to stop taking some of my medications if possible. The visit with the young doctor was enlightening and different than any other visit I had ever had with a physician. It took nearly 2 hours as we reviewed my symptoms, lifestyle, and personal health goals. The doctor told me that it was up to me to decide which direction I wanted her to go with my treatment. She said that she was here to support my goals. Did I mention it was enlightening?! Anyway, by the end of my visit we had developed a plan for my care, and I left with some vitamins, a probiotic prescription, and instructions to drink organic hibiscus tea every day. I asked what the tea would do for me. The doctor told me that it would bring my blood pressure down. And it did! That’s when I learned that natural therapies work, AND that I should probably dust off that kit of essential oils I bought from my sister and see what it’s all about.
My experience with the naturopathic physician has started me on a journey, a quest, for natural health and wellness. As a registered nurse for 25 years who was trained to work in traditional western medicine, this is a total about-face. Modern medicine focuses on a pill for every ailment. And, while I truly believe that at times medications are necessary, I want to learn about what other options might be available that can do the same job and be better for me. Let’s face it. Medications have side effects. For every pill we take we are risking damage to our liver and kidneys. Unfortunately, they don’t make pills that regenerate those organs. So, if I can get a comparable result without a chemical medication, that is so much better for me and my family. And so I began the process of exploring oils.
