Grief…what is it to you? Most commonly we think of grief as the sorrow we feel when somebody dies; however, we feel grief when a relationship ends or we lose something important to us. Grieving a loved one can be overwhelming and many of us need counseling to understand the emotional pain we’re going through. After my son died suddenly at the age of 26, I wasn’t coping well, so I sought grief counseling through hospice. I went to weekly group meetings for six months and it helped tremendously.
Recently, a co-worker’s husband died of cancer, and I’ve been talking to her about grief and grief therapy. I was happy to find two different local hospice organizations that provide grief support. I will go with her at least to the first meeting because that first meeting is difficult and very emotional. I’m happy that I can help somebody with their grief.
When my son died, I didn’t know about the possibility of using essential oils to work through the emotions of my grief. Today I know that it’s possible to use certain essential oils to support the emotions we go through during the seven stages of grief, which are shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, testing, and acceptance. The aroma of certain oils can be grounding, uplifting, calming, and healing. Some can support stress relief, anxiety, depression, negative emotions, and mental clarity.
I made a roller bottle for my friend with Bergamot, Frankincense, and Vetiver essential oils. These oils may help ease stress and anxiety. Frankincense is known to help reduce stress and negative emotions because its high sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes levels. Feel free to look up these scientific words to learn more about them. Vetiver is a grounding essential oil valued for its uplifting, soothing, healing, and protective properties. I use it in my evening sleep support blend and relaxing roller blends.
I also made a misting spray for my friend with Marjoram, Lemon, Clary Sage, Rosemary, and Bergamot essential oils. This blend can be used in a diffuser as well. The oils in this blend may calm the nervous system and lower blood pressure; provide a refreshing and invigorating aroma; restore balance and dispel the confusion associated with loss; clear mind chatter; Rosemary is uplifting to the mind and could help with mental clarity, depression, confusion, and lethargy.
