Read your labels
The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health administration (OSHA) has identified over 800 toxic or potentially cancer causing agents used in ordinary personal care products. Over 700 of them cause acute toxic effects, such as tumors, developmental abnormalities, and skin and eye damage. And perfumes and colognes are even worse! There are over 5,000 chemicals used in the manufacture of fragrances, and OSHA has identified at least 900 of them as being toxic. These toxic chemicals have been known to cause infertility, genital abnormalities, cancer, birth defects, and kidney and nervous system damage.
So, before you apply that fragrant soap, lotion, deodorant, shampoo or cologne, read the label. Here are some toxic ingredients you will definitely want to avoid:
Coal tar dyes
FD & C colors
Sodium lauryl sulfate
Organo chlorine pesticides in lanolin
Musk amberette, musk xylene, and musk keytone
A better alternative
Remember that true beauty, like true health, comes from the inside out. First, make sure that you are emotionally and spiritually healthy, avoiding negative emotions and a toxic lifestyle of stress and processed foods. Make sure that your skin is getting what it needs, in the form of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from supplements and raw, living foods.
As you work your way outward, substitute toxic shampoos and soaps for versions that do not contain sulphates, deodorants for ones that do not contain aluminum and toothpastes for ones that do not contain fluoride. Many people are returning to simplicity by using clean and inexpensive options like baking soda for toothpaste. And Young Living has AMAZING toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant and soap – all free of toxins and all made with therapeutic grade essential oils!
There is hardly anything better for the skin than pure, therapeutic grade essential oils. Because essential oils are extremely concentrated and are the life essence of the plant, they are one of the highest known sources of antioxidants. They stimulate the skin’s cells to reproduce at a quicker rate, helping to reverse aging. They penetrate and moisturize deep into the cells. They detoxify, reduce puffiness and inflammation, and help to restore collagen and elastin.
