Wait…sugar can be GOOD for us!?

Eating sugar isn’t healthy… but our SKIN LOVES IT!

Its starting to feel like winter!
Lips are getting chapped,
skin is dry and flaky….

What do we do then?  Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!  & exfoliate!

If you’re like me, you look at the price tags on fancy bath products at the store and set them back on the shelf.  And its not just the price tags that shock me, but the ingredient list too!  uhhhh, not a good sign when you can’t pronounce 1/2 the ingredients in your bath products!

Sidenote: If you haven’t gotten the EWG’s Skin Deep App for your phone yet, you should really download it.  Makes deciphering all those pesky labels super simple! (Read a little more about EWG here.)

So, what’s an affordable, healthy way to keep our skin
smooth and happy??

Make that stuff ourselves,
with ingredients we already have in our kitchen!

Did you know that the most fabulous feeling on winter’s dry skin is stepping out of a nice warm shower after using a homemade sugar scrub?!  Not kidding!  I forgot just how great it was myself until I realized that I was using gallons of lotion on my poor flaky skin…   Then I looked at the empty jar of sugar scrub in the shower, and remembered how easy it was to make, and how I was neglecting myself by not doing it RIGHT NOW!

Literally, the shower was warming up… I ran into the kitchen, dumped some sugar into my jar, dumped some organic olive oil on top (yep, right out of the bottle I use to cook with), mixed it with my finger and hopped in the shower!  I didn’t use an exact recipe, but my skin thanked me anyhow.

That’s how easy it is… sugar and oil, and of course I like to add my Young Living Essential Oils to the mix.  Lavender is great for making my skin feel good, and it just relaxes me when I get a whiff!

Here’s the actual SUPER SIMPLE recipe. I LOVE looking up recipes and DIY stuff on Wellness Mama’s blog.  That’s where my first sugar scrub recipe came from, and she has lots of great ideas for variations!

Sugar Scrub Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar (white or brown sugar- preferably organic)
  • 1/2 cup oil (olive oil, almond, and coconut oil work great)
  • Optional: 15-20 drops of essential oils of your preference

Sugar Scrub Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients and store in an air tight jar.
  2. Use 1 tablespoon as needed in the shower. Scrub skin with the mixture and rinse will. It will leave your skin feeling like silk!

Sugar scrubs also make an easy DIY gift!
FYI, be careful after you use this scrub on the bottoms of your feet…
oil + shower = slick!

I’d love to hear how you felt after using it. And I’d also love to hear what else are you using this winter to keep your skin happy!

Happy Scrubbing!
