Having Thyroid Problems? Check Your Hair Products

Are Your Hair Products Making You Sick?

Thyroid irregularities are often overlooked by women because the symptoms are so deceptive. I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid after I gave birth to my son in 2006. At the time I was exhausted, had trouble sleeping, felt anxious, and my hair was falling out like crazy. Everyone kept saying it’s just your hormones. Give them time to settle down. I had returned to work and was stressed beyond belief, so I assumed they were right until my heart felt like it was going to pound right out of my chest as I was walking down the stairs with my infant son. At the doctor’s, I was told they were surprised I hadn’t had a stroke because my hormone levels were so high.

Fast forward 11 years later and here we are talking about the thyroid again because at that time it never occurred to me that the products I was using may be hurting my thyroid. But I was so wrong. Since then I have found out that plug-ins are poison to the endocrine system. (I used to use them all the time) But nothing prepared me for what was in my seemingly innocent hair conditioner.

I had used Organix now OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk Conditioner for years. In light newly discovering how bad the majority of these products are; I decided to delve deeper into an old product stash I had. I cannot begin to describe to you how pissed and scared I am about the ingredients I found.

Toxic Ingredients Found:

FRAGRANCE- Has a moderate to high risk in regards to health concerns. According to the EWG.org, ‘The word “fragrance” or “parfum” on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals and ingredients used as fragrance dispersants such as diethyl phthalate. Fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system.’ You can add ‘scent’ to the list of words to avoid. Basically, if you see the words, fragrance, parfum or scent in the ingredients, put the product down and slowly back away.
