Essential oils for Cleaning

While essential oils have been used for thousands of years for many reasons, you can’t deny their properties when it comes to cleaning. They provide a non toxic, chemical free alternative to many traditional solutions. The air quality in your home will be so much better and your kids and animals will thank you. If you want to know how your cleaners holds up for toxicity, visit ewg.org.

I was so surprised (not to mention disappointed)  when my previous cleaner “Simple Green” scored an F. How misleading is that name? 🙁

Removing Toxic cleaners is a sure way to get your respiratory and endocrine system the relief it needs. Not to mention your skin.  That bright blue dish soap isn’t so nice to your hands and cuticles. Cleaning with Lemon can actually improve your mood. Does your cleaner have those powers?

With just a few simple supplies you can clean your house without harmful chemicals. You will need Dr Bronners baby Soap, White Vinegar and baking soda  (all found at any grocery store) and some Young Living essential oils.

My fave essential oils for cleaning: Tea Tree, Lemon, Clove, Orange, Purification, RC and Thieves  all have great cleansing potential around the home. I personally use Thieves cleaner for almost  everything these days. And I mean everything: Litter boxes, windows, floors, cabinets, sinks, even my granite counter top or the rugs when the cats decide to puke on them (why they always find a rug and not tile is bewildering). I do make a potty pod to plunk in the loo when I need a little cleaning, but that’s mainly because I don’t have to scrub it. 🙂 If you want to experiment with your own solutions, here are some ideas.

Yoga Mat Cleaner: Add 10 drops of tea tree to a 4 oz spray bottle to clean your yoga mat with.

Gooey Labels won’t come off? Try a drop of lemon and rub with a paper towel.

Hand Soap  Dr Bronners is great. I like to add a few drops of essential oils. Whatever your favorites are would be great. I use Thieves, Lavender & RC together, Lemon and Basil together or orange and Spruce together.

Gym Bag Buddy – Add 10 drops of purification to a 4 oz spray bottle to spray down your gym back. If your shoes are extra stinky like mine, add a drop of purification to a cotton ball and place one in each shoe overnight.

Laundry Refresher – Add 10 drops of purification or lavender to a 4 oz spray bottle to spray down laundry. I also like to add a few drops of Joy to a dryer ball and store with extra sheets so they smell yummy when I am ready to put them on the bed.

For paint on your hands, Sharpies or crayons on the wall, anything gooey or sticky – a drop of lemon will take it right off. I have these awesome lights that go up my banister at Christmas time, but I have to duct tape the extension cord to the floor so we don’t trip and go flying going up or down the stairs. (Safety first!). When I pulled the tape up the first year I had essential oils, it took me months to realize lemon would do the trick!

All purpose cleaner: A large spray bottle half vinegar / half water: 10 drops of lemon and 10 drops of tea tree essential oil. Boom! Now your kids can help you clean and you don’t have to worry about having food on a counter you just sprayed with cleaner!

Fabric Softener: A Gallon jug: 7 cups of vinegar, 6 cups of water, 1 cup of baking soda (ad it super slow unless you want an explosion on your hands), and 20 drops of essential oil.

Air Freshener: Ok, I have to admit something here. The match in the bathroom? Oh My Gosh, I was in my 30’s when I first saw it! Add 10 drops of purification or lavender to a 4 oz spray bottle to spray in a room where you have a stench. A diffuser works wonders too. Just diffuse your favorite essential oil.

Disposal Stinky? Just add a drop or 2 of lemon or  purification.

Washing machine stinky? combine 1 cup of baking soda, 1 cup of vinegar and 10 drops of lemon and run the cycle on clean.

Car Air freshener: Add a drop of RC to a wooden peg and clip it to the air vent. YUM!

Carpets. 2 cups of baking soda 15 drops of thieves or purification. Mix well in a jar. Sprinkle on the carpet and let it sit for 10 mins before vacuuming it up.

Soft scrub: 1 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup dr bronners soap, 15 drops of lemon (or a combination of lemon and Tea tree). Mix slowly until you get a creamy texture.

Sinks need revitalizing? 4 cups of hydrogen peroxide, 4 cups of water and 10 drops of lemon. Leave it in the sink for 10 minutes with the plug in.

There is no right or wrong, there is only what works for you.

Think of the space you will save under your sink 🙂 Not to mention, there is no harm (only awesome) by breathing it in, vs those chemicals that will give you a blinding headache!
