I was chatting with a friend at lunch yesterday about diets. This friend of mine is awesome. He’s always so researched and I love the intelligent conversations we can have and the respectful disputes we can have.
He’s following the Keto diet and he’s had some amazing results. We just switched to more of a plant based (I am not saying vegan as it’s not) diet and are feeling pretty amazing.
Whether it’s Paleo, Keto, Vegan, Whole30, whatever it is, they all promote one thing: WHOLE FOOD and no junk!
We have some serious challenges with our food plate today and money is making the world sicker. Things that make us yield bigger crops, things that make us yield more product, make people buy more. Don’t get me started on the Bayer / Monsanto merger! If that isn’t about money I don’t know what is. Despite what their vision is. Money over people never wins.
A GMO, or genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. It makes the seeds ‘immune’ to round up. So when farmers spray for weed control, the crop is ‘safe’.
GMO’s are banned in the EU.
Crops are now sprayed with a ‘round up’ product that has been proven to impact our health. Roundup Ready crops are crops genetically modified to be resistant to the herbicide Roundup. Roundup is the brand-name of a herbicide produced by Monsanto. Its active ingredient glyphosate was patented in the 1970s. Roundup is widely used by both people in their backyards and farmers in their fields. Roundup Ready plants are resistant to Roundup, so farmers that plant these seeds must use Roundup to keep other weeds from growing in their fields. So the seeds are adulterated and then the crop is sprayed with chemicals. Why would we eat that????
One of their most notorious product creations was a chemical by the name of ‘Agent Orange’, which was used for chemical warfare in Vietnam—killing and disfiguring what is estimated to be millions of Vietnamese people.
Since that time they began to use that same knack for helpful technology for food production and agricultural domination. Monsanto is most notorious for their “round up ready” products (seeds that grow their own pesticides for instance) as well as creating seeds that can’t reproduce after their first growth—forcing farmers who buy the seeds to continue buying year after year.
Many diets are now steering us away from dairy. It’s not dairy that’s the issue. It’s the fact that the cows are shot with hormones to make more milk and the grass that they eat is now sprayed with roundup. So skip the milk unless you want to drink a hormone cocktail with a side of roundup. There are so many alternatives.
Soy and Corn
According to the center for food Safety, 94% of Soy is Genetically modified and Corn at 92%
Choose Grass fed & Organic over traditional meat. The reason is most animal feed contains soy and corn (Did you read above??)
Wheat vs Einkorn
Einkorn means “single grain” in German, and is a type of wheat. We could call it the original wheat, as it archaeologists have identified it in digs in the Fertile Crescent dating back as early as 7500 B.C. As it has not been hybridized, it can be found growing in the wild in places our modern wheat could never survive.
Unlike the wheat you see on modern, American mega-farms which has 42 chromosomes in its DNA, Einkorn only has 14 chromosomes. Well that’s cool, but what does it mean? It means it is far easier to digest, and the nutritional value (yes there is some) of the wheat is easier to absorb. In other words, it is unadulterated.
If you do nothing else, Throw all the margarine away.
Hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils are found in processed products like cookies, crackers, margarine and fast food. The vegetable shortening Crisco was the first manufactured trans fat. Trans fats are very damaging to health because they promote inflammation and increase the risk of diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Trans fats also reduce good (HDL) cholesterol while increasing bad (LDL) cholesterol.
The list below are not just hydronated, many are GMO.
Vegetable oils to avoid.
- Soybean oil
- Canola oil
- Corn oil
- Cottonseed oil
- Sunflower oil
- Peanut oil
- Sesame oil
- Rice bran oil
Fats to try: Avocado oil, coconut oil, EVOO, Real grass fed butter.
Sugar Causes Insulin Resistance. The main function of insulin is to drive glucose from the bloodstream into cells. But when we eat a Western diet, the cells tend to become resistant to the effects of insulin.
- Increased sugar intake is directly correlatedto higher rates of anxiety and depression
- It crashes the immune system
- A studyfrom the University of California–Los Angeles showed that sugar might also compromise mental functions such as learning and memory.
- It’s addictive!
- Cutting out sugar can’t turn back time, but it can make you age more slowly. Sugar creates new molecules (AGEs) that attack the fibers in collagen and elastin — the proteins that make your skin so smooth and firm.
- Sugar might make you feel like you’re on fire, but, as with caffeine, you’re bound to crash eventually.
- Increased sugar intake is reportedly related to higher blood pressure and can also reduce good (HDL) cholesterol, increasing your risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes.
- Excess sugar intake can also create a spike in blood sugar, which is a precursor for diseases such as diabetes. Since sugar also affects our cognitive function, it’s been linked to Alzheimer’s diseaseas well. The list goes on!
All of these ingredients are in almost every pre-packaged food you can buy. Check your labels. As we have approached a more plant-based diet, we are noticing that almost ALL vegan food contains soy or corn.
Vegetables and Fruits have healing abilities. They are grown in nature for us. I think that’s a whole blog post for itself.
In the words of my friend: “If it was made my man, avoid it”
